There’s a lot of buzz about technology transforming construction. Drones, artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing — you’d think every jobsite in America looks like a science fiction movie. The reality is a lot more practical. Here’s an honest look at which technologies are actually making a difference on construction projects today, and which are still more hype than reality.
What’s Actually Working
Drones have become genuinely useful on construction sites. We use them for site surveys, progress photography, and monitoring earthwork quantities. A drone can capture in 20 minutes what used to take a survey crew half a day. The data is accurate, the cost is reasonable, and the safety benefits of keeping people off ladders and rooftops are real.
Project management software has come a long way. Cloud-based platforms allow our team, subcontractors, architects, and owners to share documents, track submittals, manage RFIs, and monitor schedules in real time from anywhere. This doesn’t sound glamorous, but it’s probably the single biggest technology improvement in construction management over the past decade.
Building Information Modeling, or BIM, continues to mature. On larger projects, 3D coordination models help us identify conflicts between structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems before they become problems in the field. Finding a duct that conflicts with a beam on a computer screen is a lot cheaper than finding it 30 feet in the air.
What’s Emerging
AI-powered scheduling and cost estimation tools are starting to show promise. These tools analyze historical project data to flag potential risks, predict schedule delays, and suggest optimizations. They’re not replacing experienced project managers, but they’re becoming useful supplements to human judgment.
3D scanning and reality capture are being used more frequently for existing conditions documentation, especially in renovation projects. Instead of manually measuring an existing building, a laser scanner can capture millions of data points in minutes and produce an accurate 3D model.
What’s Still Mostly Hype
Fully autonomous construction robots building entire structures? Not yet. 3D-printed buildings as a mainstream construction method? Not for commercial projects at any meaningful scale. These technologies exist in demonstration projects and research settings, but they’re a long way from replacing conventional construction methods on the kinds of projects most owners are building.
Our Approach at Poerio
We adopt technology when it delivers clear value to our clients — better quality, faster schedules, or lower costs. We’re not interested in technology for its own sake. Our job is to build your project well, on time, and on budget. If a drone, a software platform, or a BIM model helps us do that, we’re using it. If it’s just a shiny object, we’ll pass.
Have questions about how we use technology on our projects? We’re happy to show you.
